Getting a Library Card

To check out materials from the library, you must have a Library Card.  Library cards are issued without charge to any person living, working or owning a business or property in the Township. Proof of residence or employment must be shown when registering for a library card. Stop by the library to get your card. If you are a new resident, bring any document available that shows your name and address - a driver's license, voter registration card, even a utility bill.

Children residing in the Township and entering kindergarten are eligible for a library card. In addition, any child attending school in the Township is eligible for a library card.

2005 Library Card

We encourage patrons to bring their library card when visiting the library.  Otherwise you must present some form of I.D. to borrow materials.  Also, when picking up reserved material for family members the library card of the person reserving the material should be presented.

A fee of $1.50 is charged to replace a lost library card.

Library cards are valid for 3 years, after which residents must show ID to verify that they still live in the Township. Then the card will be valid for another 3 years.

Viewing Your Library Account On-Line with My Account

You can call 908-647-2088 ext. 0 to renew items on your library card, or you can do it online with My Account, using the online catalog to:

  • look up,
  • renew, and
  • place holds on materials. (Note: if the catalog shows an item as available and you wish to pick it up today, please call the library at 908-647-2088 so that we can pull the item off the shelf for you immediately.)

When you log in, you will need your Library Card number.  You will also need a PIN.

  • If you have not already obtained a PIN/password at the Library (for the old system), use the last 4 digits of the phone number that you used when you applied for a Library Card.
  • You can change your PIN by following the link to "My Account".
  • If you still have trouble, call the Library 647-2088 ext. "0"

To see what you currently have checked out, go to http://catalog.mainlib.org/Search/default.aspx?ctx=16.1033.0.0.3, and follow the links to "My Account," then "Review My Account."

User Is Blocked message
When trying to access your account online, if you see a message stating that your library card is blocked, it could be for several reasons, including: your card may have expired and needs to be updated; you may have too many items overdue; or you may have accrued fines of more than $5.00. Please call the library at 908-647-2088 ext. 0 or stop by the front desk for more information!

Expired Library Card
Every three years, your library card needs to be updated. (If you have a courtesy card, it needs to be updated each year.) To update your card, we need to verify that you are a Long Hill resident and ensure that we have your correct contact information. Your driver's license is the easiest way for us to verify that information, but you can also bring a tax, utility or credit card bill that is addressed to you. If you don't have ID with you and your card needs to be updated, we'll happily hold the items you want to check out until it's convenient for you to stop by again. (Children whose card needs to be updated must bring a parent to the library to show their driver's license.)

Email Notification

To get notified via email instead of phone when items you have requested arrive at the library, and to receive courtesy email reminders three days before items are due, you just need to give us your email address. You can stop in and give it to us, or do it online: log into the catalog (see Viewing Your Account Online for detailed instructions) and go into My Account, then click Add/Update My Email Address and fill in the form. If you have any difficulty please call us at 908-647-2088 ext. 0.
